JOURNEY TO THE ORIGINS

VIAGGIO ALLE ORIGINI

原点回帰への旅

Aki Mimura was born in Shonan, a seaside area in Japan, on 1st Nov 1983.
Growing up enjoying the sea and the sunlight, it is here that her love for nature started and where she realised humankind was part of it, rather than a separate entity. Creating and drawing have been emotional outlets for her since she was little. Visiting Southeast Asian countries by herself when she was a teenager and being surrounded by the unknown brought about her awakening to exoticism. She then began teaching herself toreutics, wood carving and drawing.

She studied and acquired a degree in Product Design from Tama Art University in Tokyo in 2007. After graduation, she built her career as a professional watch designer at Seiko Watch Corporation, having a standout watch-design technique that required an extraordinary delicate attention to detail. Here she created many beautiful timepieces that imbued the concept of time into a physical form. As a watch designer, she acquired the skills necessary to apply classical and modern art and design techniques and styles to watch design. On top of this, she gained an understanding of other areas related to the arts, such as craftsmanship, fashion, and technology.

One day Mimura decided to follow her heart and broaden her horizons, and departed on a journey back to her roots. Her months-long stay in Kenya, Tanzania, and the Sahara's natural beauty awakened a side of her that was more attuned to the natural world, leading her to creating pieces that intend to coexist and blend in with nature.

In 2019 she moved to Milan, Italy, where she started making her own creations in the form of carvings and paintings. She then relocated to Carrara, motivated by the town's history with marble. It is here that she found a deep appreciation for this material. Mimura started sculpturing with stone in this town, expressing the light and shadow of nature, mother Earth, the beauty of the Universe, and femininity. Carving marble became an organic part of her life. Her sculpting process itself conveys her life journey.
